Department of Athletics Announces Creation Of Basketball Excellence Fund

The University at Buffalo Blue & White Fund is excited to announce the launch of the Basketball Excellence Fund, which has been established to provide ongoing and recurring, comprehensive financial support for our men's and women's basketball programs.

"The BEF was created to provide our coaches with additional resources for their programs," says Eric Gross, Assistant Athletic Director for Development. "Resources to be put toward any critical areas of need that our coaches believe will help them compete for and win championships. This fund also gives the UB community, alumni, friends and fans, an opportunity to have a very tangible impact on the continued growth of UB Basketball."

The Blue and White Fund and the men's and women's basketball teams look forward to engaging more individuals who share their vision of taking the fund—and their programs—to the next level. Contributors to the BEF will receive exclusive opportunities and access to the program of their choice.

"The Basketball Excellence Fund is a crucial component to our overall mission of bringing big-time college athletics to Western New York," UB Director of Athletics Danny White said. "Supporting this fund will help build a foundation for excellence for years to come. We want to establish a championship culture here at UB and the Basketball Excellence Fund is a step in that direction."

Bulls Accept Invitation to Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

BUFFALO, NY – For just the second time in school history, the University at Buffalo football team will play in a bowl game as the Bulls accepted an invitation to play in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Sunday.

UB will face San Diego State out of the Mountain West Conference on Dec. 21 at Bronco Stadium in Boise, ID. The game will kick off at 5:30 pm EST and will air nationally on ESPN.

"We are excited to be going to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. They do a great job with their bowl experience," UB Director of Athletics Danny White said. "The community really rallies behind it. For us, it's a big moment. It's a testament to the work of Coach Quinn and his staff and these student-athletes. They have worked hard to build the program to this point. The key is that we don't look back. We want to be enjoying this moment every year."

Buffalo finished the regular season 8-4 and went 6-2 in conference play. The Bulls' eight regular-season wins were a record in their FBS era and their six conference wins were the most since joining the Mid-American Conference in 1999.

This will be the first ever meeting between UB and San Diego State. The Aztecs finished the regular season 7-5 and went 6-2 in the Mountain West Conference.

"It's been four years in the making. I couldn't be more proud of this senior class and coaching staff to have this opportunity," head coach Jeff Quinn said. "We talked about setting our goals towards being a football program that has a November and December tradition. And to be invited to a bowl game when we knew there were more bowl eligible teams, represents the kind of hard work we have invested in ourselves. A chance to play in the Famous Potato Bowl is a great opportunity for our kids."

UB's only other bowl appearance was the 2009 International Bowl –a 38-20 loss to Connecticut in Toronto's Rogers Centre. Buffalo was invited to the 1958 Tangerine Bowl, but declined the invitation after being told two of its African-American players would not be allowed to participate in the game.

UB Athletics Blue & White Fund Launches New Bullsblueandwhite.com

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo Blue and White Fund announced today that UB Athletics has received a $400,000 gift from two long-time supporters, Robert (’67) and Carol Morris.

The gift, in support of UB Athletics capital initiatives, was made with a challenge to other UB alumnus, friends and fans to step forward and do the same. With this in mind, the Morrises have pledged an additional $200,000 if and when a second gift of $400,000 or more is secured by the Blue and White Fund.

“We are extremely grateful to Bob and Carol for their gift and their efforts to help us obtain additional resources for our student-athletes and coaches through their challenge,” University at Buffalo Director of Athletics Danny White said. “Resource development for capital projects is a critical component of the UB New York Bulls Initiative and this gift gives us incredible momentum as we continue to build support for facility enhancements. Support like this will help us take that much needed next step toward becoming a ‘big-time’ program and realizing our goal of competing for championships every single year.”

With this gift, Robert and Carol will be recognized as UB Athletics Shareholders Society members. The Shareholders Society is an exclusive group of contributors who make significant philanthropic gifts, above and beyond what they may do in order to receive various game-day benefits for football and basketball.

In 2006, the Morrises made a substantial gift to UB Athletics to build the Morris Sports Performance Center, the primary strength and conditioning facility for UB student-athletes. In addition, the Morrises have been long-time supporters of UB Arts and Science.
