UB Stadium Equipment Room Named for Ronald Balter and Family

BUFFALO, NY – Thanks to a generous gift from Ronald Balter, the equipment room at University at Buffalo's UB Stadium has had a significant upgrade and will now be known as the Ronald Balter and Family Equipment Room.

The equipment room interior was reconfigured with a modular organizing system facilitating a more efficient operation. In addition, office space was built for equipment room personnel. The equipment room services the UB football, baseball, track and field and cross country teams.

"Ron has been a dedicated friend and supporter of UB Athletics for as long as I can remember," Equipment Room Manager Dave Borsuk said. "This gift has helped to transform our equipment room operation. The renovation provides us with a modern-day work space, and is another upgrade to showcase to recruits."

A 1980 graduate of UB, Balter was a manager for the football team during his undergraduate years. He became an active alumnus after graduation - participating in the Metro New York Chapter of the UB Alumni Association. A football season ticket holder for many years, Balter returns to Buffalo as often as possible and travels to away games as his schedule permits - usually working the sideline with the equipment staff.

Balter has been an Alumni Ambassador for UB Admissions appearing at college fairs since 2002 and has been a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors since 2011. For his lifetime of service to UB Athletics and his generous philanthropic support, Ronald was honored with the Gugino Award during the 2008 Dr. and Mrs. Edmond Gicewicz Family Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

His family — wife Nancy, son Michael and parents Bernard and Eva - have generously supported UB Athletics and Ronald's passion for the Bulls as well. His son Michael, at age eight, was one of the youngest donors to the Blue & White Fund and followed in his father's footsteps for three seasons on the UB sidelines as a football team manager. Ronald has continued his legacy of philanthropy by providing the necessary funds to renovate the equipment room at UB Stadium. With this gift, he honors his family and continues to support the UB Bulls.

"We are very grateful for the generosity to continue to move this program forward," Director of Athletics Danny White said. "Gifts like this give us something to point to and show others this is a family that believes in what we're trying to do and has invested in our student-athletes."

Balter and his family were on hand for a dedication on Oct. 19.

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo Division of Athletics announced today that former UB hockey player Tunney Murchie and his family have committed a $1 million gift to be used toward capital projects in UB Stadium and Alumni Arena.

This is one of the largest single commitments in UB Division of Athletics history. In recognition of the gift, UB Athletics will recommend to the UB Council that the football center at UB Stadium be named "The Murchie Family Football Center."

Murchie is owner and president of Lackawanna Products Corporation in Clarence, NY. He is a 1975 graduate of Buffalo with a degree in management and also earned his MBA from UB in 1976. He played hockey for the Bulls from 1971-73 and was an assistant coach with the program in 1974. His wife, Deanna, is a 1974 graduate of Buffalo with a degree in public health.

"The entire Murchie family felt this was the right moment to make a significant gift to UB. I have worked closely with the Athletics Development staff for many years and it became evident to us the impact this gift would have on the University," Murchie said. "My family and I are excited to be part of the on-going efforts to improve the facilities at UB for all sports programs."

Under the leadership of John Lambert, the Division of Athletics has determined the multiple projects that will be impacted by this gift. Initially, a new entrance to the UB football office center along with visual identity upgrades will be completed. Construction on several other multi-purpose spaces will begin later this year.

"The Murchie family continues to be tremendous supporters of our athletics program here at UB," Lambert said. "I've enjoyed getting to know Tunney and his family personally over the past 12 years and I'm excited to work with him in determining the projects this gift can have the greatest impact on."

Murchie has been a suite holder at UB Stadium since 1999 and made a tribute gift in 2009 to name the newly renovated basketball and volleyball practice facility after his long-time hockey coach Edward Wright.
